Man accused of murdering mom had been told to attend anger management classes by San Francisco court
The man accused of murdering his mother with a gunshot to the head outside her Sunnydale home last month is a Honduran who was ordered to attend anger management classes 45 days earlier by a San Francisco court after he assaulted another woman.
Prosecutors say Marvin Monge Duran pointed a gun at Edna Monge Arevalo’s head and pulled the trigger twice to no avail. He then racked the weapon, fixed the apparent problem, and shot her dead.
He will be arraigned for the second time at San Francisco’s Hall of Justice today, after a judge earlier found there was sufficient evidence of his guilt to send him for trial.
Monge Duran, 32, had argued with his mother over the phone, the court was earlier told, and then resumed the dispute at the family home on Brookdale Avenue in the late afternoon of Saturday, June 21.
He told police he killed her because “he had reached his boiling point with her criticism of him”.
Three children inside the home witnessed the incident as it unfolded just outside the front door.
“Do it, if you have the balls,” a neighbor reported hearing the victim shout moments before the attack.
After killing his mother, Monge Duran placed his gun on the roof of a car and stayed at the scene until police arrived.
On May 7 2025 Monge Duran pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor assault against a female relative and was sentenced to a suspended term of court probation and a mandatory 12 hours of anger management classes. San Francisco prosecutors agreed to drop a felony assault charge stemming from an incident on February 8 2025.
An attorney for Monge Duran – conceding in a bail motion that he had had “a rough relationship with his mother” and noting that bail had been set at $99,999,999 – failed to secure his release.
He will appear today at San Francisco’s Hall of Justice for arraignment.
Monge Duran has pleaded not guilty to murder and child endangerment.
