UNPROVOKED: serial offender accused of vicious street robbery yards from San Francisco courthouse
A serial offender accused of a brutal attack on a man walking home from work in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood will appear in court today for arraignment on robbery and assault charges.
Prosecutors say Zane Edwards, 28, approached the man on 7th Street, just one block from the Hall of Justice, shortly after 10:00pm on August 13.
The assailant asked the man for money, drugs or a lighter and, when he was refused, he immediately launched an astonishingly violent assault.
“Unprovoked, defendant repeatedly punched victim in the face with an unknown object held firmly in his right hand,” wrote assistant district attorney Kimberly Williams in a motion to detain. “[He] thereafter placed victim in a chokehold using…an item of clothing.”
After completing his attack, Williams said, Edwards stole the victim’s wallet and fled.
The victim, who told police he was unsure whether he lost consciousness in the attack, was taken to hospital suffering from multiple facial injuries.
Officers found the suspect nearby with blood on his shoes.
Edwards’ rap sheet features constant arrests around the Bay Area for drug possession, disorderly conduct, auto theft, driving under the influence and shoplifting.
He was on probation at the time of his most recent arrest.
Edwards, who has not yet entered a plea on robbery and assault charges, remains in custody. Earlier attempts to arraign him failed owing to his refusal to come to court.
The case continues.
