11-time-deported Mexican with gun conviction, released after Oakland child abuse and domestic violence charges dismissed, detained by ICE
An 11-time-deported Mexican with an assault weapons conviction, who was most recently released when 2023 child abuse and domestic violence charges were dismissed in Oakland, appeared at San Francisco federal courthouse today after he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Juan Jose Vazquez-Hernandez, 34, pleaded not guilty to illegal reentry before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson.
The court was earlier told that the defendant had been deported or removed thrice in 2010, twice in 2012, an astonishing five times in 2016 and in 2020. He was convicted of assault weapon possession in Alameda County in 2011 and received a 300 day jail sentence and five years’ probation.
According to a sworn statement provided by ICE Special Agent Stephen Van Maren, Vazquez-Hernandez was arrested on March 10 2023 for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, making threats with intent to terrorize, child abuse and obstructing police all of which, he stated, were dismissed.
He came to the attention of ICE officials again in April 25 2025 and a sealed complaint was signed by federal judge in May which initiated a federal prosecution.
“Let the record reflect that the defendant has been arraigned and has pleaded not guilty,” said Judge Hixson this morning. He remanded Vazquez-Hernandez in custody ahead of hearing on June 26 before U.S. District Judge William Orrick.
