Felon who dodged arrest warrant for three-and-a-half years faces court over San Francisco street shooting
A felon accused of opening fire on a rival on a San Francisco street will appear at the city’s Hall of Justice today – after dodging an arrest warrant for three-and-a-half years.
Dantjuan McElroy, 43, is said to have argued with the man in the Tenderloin on November 22 2022 before grabbing a pistol from a nearby Dodge SUV and firing three or four rounds at him.
Prosecutors say video footage also shows him smashing a glass bottle over the victim’s head moments before the shooting.
He and another man subsequently fled.
The victim escaped the gunfire but suffered a laceration to the side of his head.
Cops named McElroy as their suspect the next day. A sergeant recognized him from an incident five days before the shooting, on November 17 2022, at a Pit Stop portable restroom at Eddy and Jones streets, where officers had received information he was armed.
On November 24 2022 officers found the Dodge at Seventh and Bryant streets and arrested a second suspect, who told them what happened and said the pair had headed for Hunter’s Point.
A warrant for McElroy’s arrest was issued on November 30 2022. A week later investigators raided his home at 34 Turk Street, finding evidence of his presence – but he had not returned since the shooting.
He was finally taken into custody on July 7 2026.
McElroy has a 2013 felony conviction for firearms possession in Alameda County.
He will appear this morning in Department 11 of San Francisco Superior Court for further proceedings relating to his effort to secure pretrial release. Judge Matthew Kahn earlier ordered him freed on an ankle monitor, but he remains in county jail.
