Despite being a felon forbidden to own guns, Josef Atchan nevertheless broadcast himself on Instagram Live brandishing a gun, was subsequently arrested with three guns, and then arrived at court in a car containing two more guns.
This unorthodox approach to staying below the radar came to police attention after a four month investigation by officers using ‘undercover’ social media accounts.
Although he was initially released, federal prosecutors took up the case and he was arrested again as he arrived at San Francisco Superior Court by officers and federal agents.
Atchan pled guilty on April 5 2023 after a bid to have the gun evidence suppressed failed. He will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria on June 28, 2023 at 1:00pm.
