Mask-clad supporters of man charged with assaulting federal officer pack U.S. District Court in San Francisco

A man accused of assaulting a federal officer and destruction of government property was supported by 30 mask-clad supporters at San Francisco federal courthouse this morning as he was granted bail.

Prosecutors say that Adrian Guerrero, aka Angelica Guerrero, used a knife to slash the tire of a van being used by Department of Homeland Security officials to transport a just-detained suspect in the city’s financial district on August 20.

Guerrero is accused of then pursuing DHS officers down the street, telling them “I’m going to fuck you up,” “I’m going to go after your family,” and “I’m going to stab you,” while in possession of the blade.

The 35-year-old faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

At the start of the hearing, when the case was called as USA v Adrian Guerrero, Guerrero told U.S Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim that her name was “Angelica” which prompted the judge to begin referring to him as a female.

“The Government is obviously very concerned about the conduct put forward in the complaint,” said assistant U.S. attorney Dan Karmel, “but given the charges are misdemeanors…the government is amenable to conditions of release – the main concern we have is the safety of federal law enforcement and damage to federal buildings.”

This prompted laughter from Guerrero’s 30 or so supporters – mostly young white women sporting Yasser Arafat-scarves and face masks – who packed the benches of the small courtroom C.

Karmel failed in a bid to have him prohibited from approaching federal officials.

“What is she supposed to do if she sees a uniformed federal officer – run away in the other direction?” asked an apparently unsympathetic Judge Kim to gales of laughter from the gallery.

Kim eventually agreed to ban Guerrero from approaching both 100 Montgomery Street, where the incident took place, and the ICE offices six block away at 630 Sansome Street.

Defense attorney Samantha Jaffe had complained that even this would infringe on her client’s first amendment rights.

In an interview with other media organizations the defendant complained that he was arrested and detained by ICE notwithstanding that says she is a U.S. citizen – eliding that he was obviously not detained on an immigration matter.

An Instagram post attributed to Radically Fit Oakland describes Guerrero as an athlete who, since taking HRT [hormone replacement therapy] “has known that queer and trans people should lift.”

“There are too many chuds in weightlifting,” the biography notes, “and deadlifts are very useful for flipping cop cars.”

Guerrero was released on an unsecured $10,000 bond.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem condemned Guerrero’s actions.

“Our brave ICE law enforcement are now facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them as they risk their lives to arrest the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens,” she said in a statement.

“These acts of violence are fueled by sanctuary politicians’ rhetoric vilifying our law enforcement. We will not and have not let this violence stop us or slow us down.”

This story has been updated to reflect further information about the defendant’s sex.
