Felon on bail for assault threatened women with machine gun on San Francisco street – prosecutors
A felon accused of threatening three women with a machine gun on a San Francisco street last month, while on bail for assault, will appear in court today for a preliminary hearing.
Prosecutors say Wendell Johnson, 20, slapped his girlfriend outside her Bayview home before pointing the firearm at her, her sister and her mother. Prior to the assault, according to court documents, he took the woman’s phone, reviewed its contents, and concluded she had been unfaithful.
After the incident the attacker made his escape in a black Audi.

When police arrived at Johnson’s home in the Alemany projects he gave them permission to conduct a search, which turned up two high-capacity 9mm magazines in his bedroom. A police dog helped officers search a shrub area at the back of his residence and found a Glock 19 equipped with a switch enabling automatic fire and a drum magazine.
“[C]lear and convincing evidence shows the defendant’s release poses a substantial likelihood of great bodily injury to others,” wrote assistant district attorney Alice Wong in a motion to detain.
“Defendant pointed the firearm at all three victims. Shortly after the report, defendant [was] found in possession of two 31-round 9mm Glock high capacity magazines (one loaded and one empty) in his bedroom…and a loaded Glock firearm with an auto sear conversion ‘switch’ found in his backyard.”
He was denied bail by Judge Brian Stretch. The court was earlier told that Johnson has an open case in Sonoma County – where he is charged with felony assault on a peace officer and obstruction.

In 2022 he was convicted of battery with serious bodily injury.
Johnson has pleaded not guilty to a string of assault and firearms charges. He will appear today at San Francisco Hall of Justice for a preliminary hearing where a judge will determine if the evidence is sufficient to send him to trial.
The case continues.
