Bid for ‘mental health’ release after armed carjacking in SF

Khalid Kenjoni (dob 5/3/77) was arrested on December 18, 2022 after getting into the passenger seat of a car parked at California and 23rd, pointing a gun at the driver, telling him to ‘get the **** out of the car’, and stealing the vehicle. Kenjoni was later found in the car in SOMA.

At a hearing on March 10, 2023 it appeared to San Francisco Superior Court judge Alexandra Robert Gordon that Mr Kenjoni was “diagnostically appropriate” for “MHD” – Mental Health Diversion – and was sent to appear in Department 15 – mental health court.

Kenjoni will next appear in Department 15 on May 3 where the court will consider and decide a Petition for Mental Health Diversion. He remains in custody pending this hearing.

The SF District Attorney’s office describes Mental Health Diversion as a program “which allows individuals with diagnosed mental health disorders […] to participate in a mental health program for up to two years in lieu of criminal prosecution.”

The carjacking arrest was originally reported in the SFPD Richmond Station newsletter which mentioned the crime but did not publish the identity of the person arrested. This was later provided to SF Public Safety News pursuant to a Public Records Act request.
