Child molester faces burglary charges months after release from 149 day sentence for SF shooting

A child molester accused of trying to break into San Francisco homes, barely two months after serving 149 days in jail for opening fire on a city street, will appear in court this morning.

Prosecutors say Matt Scott, 51, targeted houses in the St Francis Wood neighborhood earlier this month.

His rap sheet includes convictions in San Francisco for drug dealing in 1996, performing lewd acts on a child in 1998 and burglary in 2007, 2008, 2013, 2020 and 2021.

He was released in March after pleading guilty to gun charges.

On March 6 2026 Scott pleaded guilty to one felony, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and one misdemeanor, recklessly discharging a firearm. This followed an incident on September 23 2025 when he drew a handgun and fired into the air during a dispute in the Potrero Hill projects.

“Surveillance footage showed [Scott] near a van involved in the incident,” wrote assistant district attorney Rebecca Warren in a motion. “Defendant was waiting at the bus stop when he and the registered owner of the van had an argument. Then the defendant took out a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and fired multiple shots in the air [then] fled toward Dakota Street.”

Prosecutors dropped four other firearms charges and a judge dismissed a fifth. Judge Harry Dorfman handed him a three year suspended sentence and released him time-served – having spent a total of 149 days in custody.

Scott, who has pleaded not guilty to attempted burglary and carrying burglary tools, will appear for a preliminary hearing today at San Francisco Hall of Justice.

The case continues.
